This was an incredible opportunity and experience for my daughter. Her participation in this program has only increased her love and respect for the Asian culture for which she plans to pursue further with her college education.

The camaraderie and support of her fellow volunteers, now friends, and counselors was a parent’s dream when you cannot be there to provide for your child. In fact, it was their friendships that made this trip a success and assisted her through the difficult situations. My daughter was teaching at Youmu Elementary in the mountains. At no time did we feel Paige would be put in a situation that may cause her harm. We knew our child’s safety was a priority. This was very apparent when they removed her group from the school to wait out the typhoon. Yet, the conditions and location of the school made it very difficult for my daughter due to her fear of spiders and the isolation. The best part was she prevailed along with her group mates and became a stronger person. Working with the students, although challenging, taught her patience and to learn different approaches when faced with multiple situations and abilities. My husband & I will always reflect on this experience as the one that gave her the skill to conquer her fears and make the best of a situation. It truly is something that one can really only learn on their own.

The opportunity to volunteer and experience a culture and country that Paige could only describe as beautiful and exciting has made an everlasting impression. We could not have asked for anything else from her experience. Our most sincere thanks and we’ll be forever grateful for her being selected to participate in AID Summer.

First, I want to thank the Overseas Community Affairs Council of the Republic of China for sponsoring such a meaningful program. It gave my children the opportunity to learn about my homeland, and to enjoy the Taiwanese people's hospitality and friendship. Whenever I mention to my friends (some from Iran and Vietnam) that my daughters are going back to Taiwan to teach English, they express a wish that their own countries had such a program for their children. That makes me feel that we are very lucky to have your help. My older daughter participated a few years ago, and it is the second time for my younger daughter.

My husband is American, and we speak English at home. Our daughters weren't really able to understand Chinese even though we sent them to weekly Chinese lessons for three years. After they came back from Taiwan, my daughters were inspired to learn Chinese. My older daughter took Chinese in college and became fairly fluent. The younger daughter plans to take Chinese in college as well.

After this trip, my younger daughter realized how much effort I put into cooking traditional Tiawanese dishes for them to eat, and she enjoyed trying new authentic foods while in Taiwan. She has even been requesting to eat some foods I cook, some of which she had been afraid to try before the trip! Before participating this year, our daughter had excitement but also some apprehension that the trip might not live up to her expectations. Afterwords, when we picked her up from the airport, she couldn't wait to tell us about all the exciting events she had participated in. She made friends not only with Taiwanese people, but with people from all over the world. It was a very positive experience for her. She told me the tour this year was so much better than the first one. She loved visiting Sun-Moon Lake, the 101 building, the Nationational History museum, the night market, and the amusement park. She said she could see the improvement from the earlier program.

My daughter received thank-you notes from the students she worked with. She proudly displays these notes on her desk, and trip pictures on her wall. One of her students wrote that he initially thought learning English would be boring, but now he wants to participate again. He told her that her teaching made learning fun, and he hopes to see her back next year. Our daughter was quite moved by this student's note. My daughter said that when you make an impact on someone's life, it makes you feel good about yourself. This was an unforgettable summer for her, and she values the experiences she had in Taiwan.

Again, I would like to thank崇文國小and the host family for providing care and support during the trip.

Nathan had a great time attending the AID Summer 2013. He was very fortunate to be assigned at Mu Dan middle school and he enjoyed his fellow teaching volunteers and the middle schoolers very much.

As a parent, I'm very grateful to the institution which put out a lot of effort training these volunteers and tending their needs. I felt very connected by looking at the activity pictures that were posted on the website daily. The places and activities the instituion organized were all so interesting. Most of the places I've only heard about but never been to.

Thank you for your coordination from the US side. It is an amazing program and I'm so glad that Nathan had this experience.

I am glad that my son, Edward had the opportunity to participate again in the 2013 AIDSummer program. A special thanks to all the counselors, CYC, OCAC and the MOE along with everyone else that made this year’s program a success. The friendly bonds that my son has made with his fellow “teachers”, students, as well as the staff of his host school will be long lasting. Furthermore, the friends made during the training and the tour will also last a long time. My son told me that watching the 7th and 8th graders at Rui-Shui Jr. High in Hualian County learn the English that my son taught them was wonderful once they were able to understand and use it. The experience that my son has obtained from attending the AID Summer program is a precious one and the influences will be able to use for a lifetime. Additionally, by attending, Edward has greatly improved his Chinese skills by talking with all the staff members at his school and also with the counselors. Having attending the AIDSummer program again this year was probably one of the best ways to spend his summer before heading back to college.
