School Info
Song May Elementary is located at the most southern part of Puzi City, Chiayi County, in a town called Niutiaowan, which is considered a rural area of Taiwan, hence the low cultural diversity you might observe from the kids here. The town itself is next to a provincial high way no.19, and the school gets students from 3 local villages, including Song Hua, May Hua, and Nan Jhu, our school has a total of 8 classes, 7 of which are elementary classes, with 1 kindergarten class, and a total of 170 students. A big percentage of our students’ families are either single parent, foreign parent(s), or raised by grandparents, therefore most of our students are very naïve.
Song May Elementary has been established for 94 years, the school also has lots of open spaces, with the actual area nearing 2.7 hectares, and the combination of large area and long history results in lots of old trees all around the school, with a particular banyan nearing 85 years old. Educational wise, we focus on increasing our student’s interests in reading and art, to increase their culture diversity, there is also a Niutiaowan lake 300m away from the school, which prompt us to promote canoeing as a school specialty, we would also like to promote international education to increase our students’ global awareness as our next major project.
Town Info
Niutiaowan, is a typical rural village located near the Chiayi County, meaning most of the town’s population are farmers. Back in the days, Niutiaowan had lots of shops, including local supermarkets, hair dresser, home appliances, food, pharmacies, and even cinema; we were considered one of the most prosperous village in the Puzi City’s rural area. As time goes on, job opportunities and economic activities in local villages are shrinking, therefore most of the young population left the village and moved into the big city for work, hence the ageing village populations. There is a Niutiaowan lake in the village, which is the main source of water for farmers around this village, their main harvests include Balsampear, sweet melon, tomatoes, and orchid.
