Dear OCAC,
I am the parent of Kathy Chiang. When Kathy came back
from Taiwan after the AID Summer program, she told us
nonstop about her experience.

She enjoys teaching the kids she taught at Minghu
elementary school in Taipei and felt welcomed by the
teachers/directors and students. This program gave her
an opportunity to be a leader, to interact with her peers
from multiple places, and to immerse herself in Taiwanese
culture. Although she was sick during teaching week, she
was well taken care of by the people who were in charge
her team.

She bonded with the students, who tried to invite her to
their houses and connected with her on social media. The
people in charge of her group fed them well. After
teaching, she went on a trip to explore the amazing
sceneries in Taiwan.

She told us this was an unforgettable experience.

Dear Sir:
We would like to take this opportunity to share our experience on sending our daughter to join 2018 Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Service Program in Taiwan.
It was her third time being in Taiwan, but this time was to join this volunteer service program. We are very grateful to hear about her unforgettable experience and so many great memories. Although we worried hearing her comments on how hard and intense the training week was, but we were happy to hear that the students enjoyed her teaching, and her wonderful time living with her host family whom she is still connected with. We felt that her time teaching at the elementary school was the most fulfilling experience she has ever done, her teaching side had its difficulties but she said that seeing the students improve because of her teaching is the most rewarding outcome she had ever experienced and she wishes that she could have a chance to do it again. We are sure that it was worth spending, money for her air ticket, and part of her summer time as she has learned many social skills including dealing with young kids and difficult people, and living with a host family.
Thank you for giving her this opportunity.

Thank you to the OCAC (Overseas Community Affairs Council) for the opportunity for overseas youth to experience teaching English to younger Taiwanese children.

My 17 year old son was unsure of the program when he first heard about it in Seattle. When he returned home 1 month later, he said that even though the experience was very intense with class preparation and planning, he enjoyed every minute of it because it was so rewarding to work with children. The program’s goal may have been to instill a love of English. I think it was accomplished because every morning, elementary school students would be huddled outside the classroom door ready to greet their teachers. I am sure that the visiting teachers also fell in love with Taiwan and its people through their teaching experience, and thereby, have come to appreciate more of their Taiwanese culture and heritage.

He appreciated that the local host families were warm and friendly. The teachers were paired in groups of 2 and they became great partners inside and outside of the classroom. The program administrators were also very welcoming and supportive of the teachers and students, because through the welcoming and ending celebrations, introductions were made and learning was fun and engaging. The closing celebration was a wonderful collaboration between the students and their teachers. Together they prepared a skit for 2 weeks which was shared with the entire group. It seems to me that at the end of the program, it was bittersweet for all involved with tears of joy. Thank you OCAC! It was the experience of a lifetime.

Don’t be sad that it’s over. Be glad that it happened.

Aid Summer Volunteer Program was highly anticipated by both my daughter and me since we learned about the program years ago, and we were very excited that she was accepted for the program this summer!

Not only she got the chance to visit her mother’s homeland, but also she was on her own after we sent her off at the airport until we picked her up weeks later. She got the chance to see the country without the filters from her mother, knowing that she could contribute herself helping kids much less fortunate than she is. She also met other friends her age coming from different parts of the world with the similar connection from their parents, they spent time together working on the projects to teach kids English, figure out how to help each other, how to get kids engaged in learning, and how to explore Taiwan together and have fun! What a wonderful experience they had!

As a parent, I am happy for her to get the chance to spend time in Taiwan to learn more and see more about her mother’s homeland, and to become more confident about herself and knowing that she has the ability to help others even as a 17 year old.
