I have two children and both of them are fortunate enough to be a participant in the Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Service Program in Taiwan (AID Summer Volunteer Program) in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The inspiring sense of passion of OCAC to help our children to be a more well rounded individual, to learn up-and¬-coming new things; and to gain a better understanding of this capricious world above and beyond the scope of their classroom materials deserve acknowledgement. I still vividly remember the excitement of my family when my son, Dixon was selected as one of the volunteers for the AID Summer Program in 2014. Dixon just started his second year in college in Boston now and he highly recommends his sister Charlotte should get into this program when she reaches the requirements to do so. Last month my daughter Charlotte who is now a senior in high school came back from the 2016 AID Summer Program. Both of my children enjoyed and treasured tremendously the once a life time fun filled experience of making new friends, visiting places, being a team player and learning to adjust a variety of unpredictable situations they have had through the scheduled classes and activities tailored by this program. All participants are supervised to learn responsibilities to abide by the rules and the regulations of the program; and to teach mostly the underprivileged students so as to heighten their insights exceed academic achievements as well as their maturity to a higher level. Most importantly, this program helps to shape my children to improve their ability to look at this ever¬-changing world in a new perspective; and to be a better person in general. Therefore, I offer this program my highest endorsement. With great enthusiasm, it is my sincere hope that all parents will encourage your children to participate in the OCAC AID Summer Program. First of all, I’d like to say thanks to the Taiwanese government for providing this great opportunity for the eligible young men and young women. My daughter, Celeste Hoeh, was hesitant about the trip at the beginning because of the forums she read before the trip. She was worried about the age gap between the college volunteers and the high school volunteers. Plus, it was the first time she went to Taiwan by herself. She was concerned with being alone and not knowing what to do. After the first week of training, her concerns went away as she saw that she was able to connect with other volunteers her age. The counselors from the program were nice. She learned a lot from them. When she went to teach school, she was happy that the rest of the team was all college graduates or soon to be graduates like herself. There were a couple of problems for those two weeks: 1. There were bed bugs. Some volunteer assistants and teachers there offered rooms for the team. But, I guess the principal was just doing her job by insisting for them to stay at school. One of her team members got around 100 bites on both arms and legs. Another one got around 50 bites on both arms and legs. The principal finally allowed the serious one to stay at one of the teacher’s house for a night after visiting the dermatologist. After that rest of the team got relocated to the library. 2. My daughter got swollen feet during the first week of teaching. She couldn’t walk very fast and very long and preferred to stay in the dorm during after¬school hour activities. However, I guess the school follows the “no one left behind” rule. So, she went to places with pain. Other than these two problems, everything seems to be wonderful. The students were friendly and opened to learning. The staffs were welcoming and made sure the team had whatever they need, i.e. teaching aid/supplies. The meals were nice, never a problem. The scenery was beautiful. Her team left early during the last week of the program (the tour week) to explore the true Taiwanese young life. Over all, it was a very exciting and full of new experiences type trip. She could never have had such a wonderful and unforgettable trip without the assistance from the Taiwanese government. Thank you so much again for the opportunity. Sincerely yours. Susan Hoeh
