A newly initiated internship program, named Volunteer in Air, will be launched in September 2015 to January 2016 in trial phase for this year. The program will rely on classroom technology to connect volunteer teachers in the US and Canada with students in Taiwan.
Selected applicants will be guided by classroom teachers to provide blended English learning opportunities to underserved students in Taiwan. Participants will learn skills needed for online teaching, assessment, and more in their experience as intern teachers. Compared to the AID Summer Program where the main goal is to establish interest in learning English, Volunteer in Air aims to further develop students’ practical English skills as can be applied to real world situations.
About four to six volunteers will be grouped together and will collaborate with the in-classroom teacher to teach students in classrooms in Taiwan via the internet. Volunteers will pre-record 18 video clips of their planned instruction in group projects during the summer, and the clips will be released online on a weekly basis for students’ preview in the fall semester. Volunteer-created homework assignments (either oral or written) will also be given for the students to do after previewing the video clips, and volunteers should be able to give individual feedback (either oral or written) to each student prior to each classroom session. Each volunteer will tutor small groups of 4-6 students during once-a-week classroom sessions via videoconferencing technology. Students’ E-Portfolios will be published online to demonstrate their learning path and the gradual achievements of each volunteer group. Just as in the AID Summer Program, volunteers in the new program will be awarded volunteer intern teacher certificates for 80 online instruction hours with an included job description to be issued by the Ministry of Overseas Chinese Affairs Council (OCAC).
